are Zipped Files Anyway?
Zip files are "archives" used for distributing and storing files.
Zip files contain one or more files. Usually the files "archived" in a
Zip are compressed to save space. Zip filesmake it easy to group files
and make transporting and copying
these files faster.
of zipping files:
files are too large to fit on one floppy diskette. With file spanning,
we can enable the file to fit onto 2 diskettes. This will
enable us to transport the program to another machine by first reassembling
the split file into a folder, then installing the program onto our computer's
hard drive. Let's begin.
(no graphics) REALLY compress well. Emailing a compressed (zipped) text
file as an attachment makes the sending and receiving of the zipped file
happen much faster.
for extra disk space? Zip up some seldom-used data or text files on your
hard drive ( i.e. love letters, résumés, excel files, grades,
etc…). Unzip them when you need them. When finished, zip them back up.
Maybe you don't have access to a Zip Drive or a CD-ROM burner to store
and transport large files. Now you can zip, then span the file across several
floppies, transport them to your destination, and reassemble the files
onto the hard drive of the destination PC.
